Fifty Shades of Grey……Phenomenon or nah?????

The Fifty Shades of Grey Novels written by E.L. James has taken the world by storm. It is centred on a simple down to earth college student, Anastasia Steele who falls in love with young hot Billionaire Christian Grey. The book had everyone flipping through pages as they could not get enough of the hot and sexy sex scenes venturing in the world of BDSM.

BDSM includes Bondage, Dominance, Submission and /or Sadomasochism depending on the variation you prefer. The story line of the characters can easily appear to be overshadowed due to the erotic nature of the novel but to the core, the story is really a romantic one. The story of a couple falling hopelessly in love with each other while Anastasia tries to maintain her own identity while entering in this lavish fast paced life of Christian Grey and he struggles with being a better man for her because deep down she is the one he really wants and needs.

Silver Screen Action

The movie adaptation of this book has been the most anticipated film for the past year. It is clear however that the movie got very mixed reviews. A lot of people had a very strong dislike for the film which I cannot help but think stems from something else entirely. Not to mention all the feminist groups and Christian organizations coming out of the wood work to now voice their opinion about the film. Many have stated that the movie is about abuse and sends the wrong message to young women.

My question is why now? The book was published a few years ago, why voice your opinion now? Honestly, if you don’t like something then don’t participate in it. If something is not for you then don’t watch or entertain it. I am not in to BDSM but I respect that there are people out there who live like this, this is their life, for whatever reason this is the way they are and that’s okay with me. I accept that we are not all the same and I do not feel the need to push my opinions/ beliefs on anyone.

I thought the book was a turn on and I am not into all that kinky stuff. I loved the book, the love story, the emotional roller-coaster and struggles between the two was very refreshing and normal. Maybe not for the average man seeing they are not Christian Grey but his character is not some ridiculous hero, a figment of someone’s imagination. His character is relatable, a real life, broken, ‘fifty shades of fucked up’ man who fell in love.

The movie did not have all the details and may not have perfectly portrayed all the chemistry between them aside from the sex scenes but honestly it’s not possible to capture everything. All in all I loved the books, I loved the movie, and the actors did a great job. I look forward to seeing the other two films…..Hopefully!

Until Next Time……..
